Meeting with the Dream Team!

Meeting with the Nordic Urban Development Dream Team!

I recently had the pleasure of meeting with two Swedish powerhouses – developer Atrium Ljungberg and architectural design firm White Arkitekter. Despite their “big company” status, their teams showed incredible warmth and hospitality.

Perhaps this welcoming approach is essential when handling transformative development projects. Take Slakthusområdet (the Meatpacking District), a major renovation of Stockholm’s former slaughterhouse area. Like in Japan, meat processing districts often carry negative associations. However, their sustainable development approach has completely reimagined the space, offering an exciting glimpse into the future while boldly preserving the original name – truly transforming its very meaning.

Their globally recognized WoodCity project is another development I’m eagerly anticipating. The ambitious plan converts a vast former industrial area into a cutting-edge sustainable district – guaranteed to astonish the world.

In my experience working with major Japanese developers too, I’ve noticed that exceptional professionals aren’t just talented – they’re genuinely good people. Perhaps this quality is essential for those involved in urban development projects that aim to serve everyone.
These direct interactions with project teams are what make site visits so valuable. Thank you for welcoming us so warmly! I hope to return the favor someday.

I was able to give Geoff, who guided us through Hammarby Sjöstad
, a copy of a+u – a prestigious Japanese architecture magazine featuring his interview. Being personally guided by someone featured in such a prominent publication helped me gain tremendous insight into the area. It was truly a wonderful experience.
Thank you very much!
