How it differs from sustainability
Sustainability has long been a goal for cities, but it often focuses on minimizing negative impact. Regenerative urban development goes further: rather than simply keeping resource use within the limits ecosystems can recover, it works to enhance the regenerative capacity of the ecosystems a city depends on, reversing the trend. It treats people as part of natural and social-ecological systems, emphasizing systems thinking and collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
What regenerative cities in Europe have in common
Across the cities Build Vision B.V. has visited from its base in the Netherlands, the most advanced ones redesign environment, food, energy and community not as separate silos but as a single system. In Japan: Regenerative Community Tokyo
Build Vision B.V. founded and runs Regenerative Community Tokyo to bring these insights back to Japan, working with leading European and Nordic institutions such as Denmark’s BLOXHUB and Finland’s Helsinki Partners to support regenerative initiatives in Japanese cities and regions.
Three perspectives for moving toward a regenerative city
1. From “giving back” to “growing more”: Energy saving and reduction (the sustainable mindset) bring a negative closer to zero. The regenerative mindset goes further — using the city’s activity to actively grow its capital: greenery, biodiversity, soil, and community.
2. Give materials and spaces an identity: The material passport concept gives building and product materials an identity so they are treated not as future waste but as future resources, turning the city into a storehouse of materials (urban mining). Waste is simply material that has lost its identity. 3. Make human activity the engine of regeneration: Design systems in which living, working, and enjoying the city itself regenerates the environment. Just as pedestrian-first streets improve shop revenues and air quality at the same time, economic activity and regeneration are not in conflict.

Q. What is the difference between sustainable and regenerative?
Sustainable means “do no further harm — maintain.” Regenerative goes a step further: using the city’s activity to restore and amplify nature and community to a richer state than before. Sustainability brings a negative to zero; regeneration turns zero into a plus.
Q. Which cities are leading examples of regenerative cities?
In Europe: Amsterdam (circular economy and material passports), Copenhagen (people-centered urban design), Lahti (over 99% of waste recovered as resources), plus Helsinki (full coal phase-out in 2025), Paris (the 15-minute city), Stockholm, and The Hague. What matters is not one large development but city management that bundles resources, greenery, and human activity in a regenerative direction.

Yes. We founded and run Regenerative Community Tokyo (RCT), working with companies, government, and creators to put the concept into practice in the Japanese context. The concept has also been introduced in Japan through WIRED Japan vol. 54, “The Regenerative City.”
